Santorini

It is one of the jewels in Greece’s crown, and probably one of the most peculiar islands in the world. Its volcanic origin means that it has many sea-filled craters which make a marvellous sight. Beaches are often black, too, which is quite odd and interesting. It is very popular with cruises and tourists in general, so expect it to be more crowded and expensive than other islands, but the sights will be definitely worth the price.

Naxos

The site of a number of famous ancient Greek and Romantic German Tragedies, this island has nothing to do with anything tragic nowadays: it is full of beaches, has a beautiful, well preserved set of villages in the inland, and is a great place to go and have some fun. It is a very hospitable place, and its mountains are particularly beautiful.

Crete

Crete is the biggest island in Greece, and quite a world of its own. It was the birthplace of the Minoan civilisation, which is Europe’s oldest. The beautiful palaces built by the Minoans are now reduced to their foundations, but they’re still a thrilling sight, especially if you have a good guide to explain you what they looked like.

The island itself is very beautiful, and while most of the northern part is deeply exploited and meant for mass tourism, if you rent a car and have a trip around the southern coast or in the mountainous regions in the middle of the island, you will be in for some surprises. There are marvellous landscapes, and the beaches to the south are wild, with great waves, and often there are very few people there, especially in mid season (spring and early autumn), when the climate is also milder.

Athens

Athens is one of the most interesting cities in Europe for cultural visits. Its Acropolis is a breathtaking view, and its museums are packed with great material, which has few rivals in Europe. The city is quite polluted and traffic is hectic, but you will have no difficulties in seeing everything that’s worthwhile on foot, since the size of ancient Athens was quite small... Athens, with its outdoor cafes and party mindset is also a great place to have some fun.
