Greek food

Food is great in Greece: good news! The land is rich of fine products, particularly olives (which have no equal) and wine, and there are a lot of nice recipes which you will certainly be glad to taste.

One of the national dishes is called Mousaka: it is made with eggplants, cheese, tomatoes and Béchamel sauce, and will be a real treat for vegetarians – but remember that there are also versions made with minced meat, so check with waiters before you order it... There are several great recipes with lamb, especially grilled (typical traditional dish for shepherds). Another great thing to eat is stuffed vine leaves, which have a very peculiar flavour: they are filled with ground meat, rice and mint. Greece is also famous for its Feta cheese, which used to be made by shepherds with unpasteurized goat or sheep milk: it is fairly acid and has a very peculiar taste. Feta cheese is ideal in salads, and with olives.

It must be said that Greece might be a bit of a disappointment for fish lovers: although you will find good fish, since fishing especially in the islands has not been an important economic activity for some time, fish restaurants can be tourist traps and the quality not as good as you would expect.
